Prologue

Yuuzou: Say, Rikka...{Rikka's dad's name is 悠蔵(ゆうぞう) according to the captions. --K}

Rikka: Hmm?

Yuuzou: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Rikka: I wanna be a doctor just like Mama!
I wanna heal sick people!

Ryouko: I see.

Yuuzou: Being a globetrotting photographer like me would be fun too!

Rikka: No... I wanna be like Mama!

Ryouko: Thank you. I'm happy to hear that.

Yuuzou: But to be a doctor you're going to have to do {\i1}tons{\i0} of studying!
It's going to be really stressful!

Rikka: I'll be fine!

Yuuzou: I see...

Rikka: I'm gonna study my heart out!
And someday I'll be a doctor!

Mana: Oh, they posted the test ranking.{Putting it as "test results" sounds less like a school test and more like a medical screening for some kind of disease. But putting it as "results of the test" sounds awkward. Since it's a top-10 list, I put it as "test ranking". --K}
Of course, Rikka's first place as usual, right?

Posted paper: Midterm Test Scores -- Top 10 Students{Since we don't really know the readings of most of these, I'm giving them my best guess, guided by my name dictionaries and my personal preferences (the latter where necessary for disambiguation). --K}
1st: Tojou Hiroshi{十条 博士, the last kanji is 士(gentleman/samurai), instead of 土(earth). The difference between the two is that in the first one, the base is smaller than the "arms", and in the latter it's the other way around. Also, that given name is the kanji for "hakase", nice troll Toei, w. Taken together with a liberal/literal interpretation of the kanji in the family name, you get something like, "I'm the smartest guy in this 10-person list!" --K}
2nd: Hishigawa Rikka
3rd: Nakamura Tomo {中村 朝}
4th: Yamaguchi Yuuta {山口 裕太}
5th: Outa Yuki {太田 雪}

Mana + Makoto: Huh?

Mana: Hmm?
"2nd: Hishigawa Rikka"
Huh? WHAAAAAAAA-!

Part 1

Title: Torn between a dream and a promise! Rikka is deeply troubled!

Sign: Antique Shop Solitaire {Again, only need to typeset the "Solitaire" part. This was originally in episode 8, and then used again in episode 12. --K}

Cheryl: She seems inconsolably gloomy.

Mana: Rikka...

Alice: Let's just let her be for now.

Makoto: Now that I think about it, I get the feeling that I've seen this strange stone before in the Trump Kingdom Castle.

Davi: Wait, you mean the Royal Crystals?!

Alice: What might those be?

Davi: Legendary gems that only the the Royal Family were allowed to posses.
If all five crystals were to be brought together, it is said that something incredible would happen.

Mana: And that's one of those Royal Crystals?

Davi: Well, it looks like one.

Makoto: I've only seen them once myself, so I can't really confirm it either.

Mana: Oh well.{"It can't be herped!" w --K}
Sorry, I'm kinda hungry.
Oh, that's right!
Mom said to invite you all over for dinner.

Alice: I'd be happy to join you.

Mana: How about you, Rikka?

Rikka: Sorry, I've got something else to take care of now. See you later.

Raquel: Wait up!

Alice: That's a bit troubling.

Mana: Yeah...

Sign: Western Cuisine Restaurant
Pig's Tail

Mana: I'm home!

Ryouko: Oh, welcome home!

Makoto: Who's that?

Mana: That's Rikka's mama!

Ayumi: Are you done with work for the day?

Ryouko: Nope, I'm just taking a little break.
I'm going to head home for a fresh change of clothes and then return to the hospital.

Ayumi: That's rough.

Makoto: Hospital?

Alice: Rikka-chan's mama is a doctor at a big hospital.

Ayumi: How's Yuuzou-san doing?

Ryouko: He's fine, at least according to his letters.
I don't really need to worry about him.
On the other hand, Rikka-

Mana: What's going on with Rikka?!{Whoa, whoa, calm down there, Mana. w --K}

Ryouko: Well... umm... I don't think it's really a big deal, but...
I've been hearing sudden yelling and random noises coming from her room.
And she's been mumbling stuff in her sleep that sounds like some kind of incantation.
It just seems a little odd, that's all.

Rikka: Sorry, I've got stuff to do today as well, so I'll be heading out now.

Mana: Ah! Rikka!
I wonder what on earth's up with Rikka.

Makoto: Is it really such a big deal that Rikka didn't get the top score on the test?

Mana: In Rikka's case, yes it is.
Rikka's dream is to become a wonderful doctor just like her mama.
And for that reason she's gotta be the smartest person that can study the best in our school.
Therefore, it's a serious matter if her grades slip.

Makoto: I see.

Mana: Rikka's mom is worried too. There's gotta be some reason.

Davi: It's gotta be that, then!{No, not *that*!}

Mana + Makoto: That?

Cheryl: Definitely that!

Mana + Makoto: Definitely what?

Cheryl: Rikka's become a deviant!
I saw all about it on TV.

Davi: Young girls these days are using any sort of petty excuse they can to go wayward.

Rikka: What're {\i1}you{\i0} lookin' at?!

Armband: Secretary-General {総長}
Coat: Nice to meetcha♥{I figure the よろしく♥ is meant in an ironic manner here. Also, I think these are pretty much going to be impossible to typeset. xD --K}

Mana: No way.

Lance: We've got a big problem!{And Mana finally takes a mascot to the face. In episode 14. Well, better late then never, right? w --K}
We just saw Rikka go into a huge building!{"We" being Lance and Alice, of course. --K}
And then we heard noises like something getting slapped around.

Davi: No way! She's brawling!

Cheryl: She actually {\i1}has{\i0} gone wayward!

Mana: You've got to be kidding me!

Lance: This building here!

Mana: Don't be rash, Rikka!
Huh?

Rikka: You three...

Mana: Competitive Karuta?

Makoto: What's that?

Mana: It's a game where you try and match up cards containing poems taken from the "100 Poems by 100 Poets" collection.

Raquel: It's not a game!

Mana: S-Sorry.

Raquel: Competitive Karuta is a full-fledged sport!

Mana: So... when you were yelling in your room...

Rikka: I was just practicing with Raquel.

Makoto: {\i1}Who's{\i0} gone wayward, now?

Alice: I didn't know you'd started doing Karuta, though.

Rikka: What got me started was reading the "100 Poems by 100 Poets" book.
I'd planned to just study it, but poem after poem of bitter love wrapped themselves around my heart and captivated me.
And then when I looked into it, I found out about Competitive Karuta.

Raquel: And before we knew it, we'd joined its ranks.

Alice: That's perfect for you Rikka, but I guess that's why your studies have fallen by the wayside.{http://www.practical-japanese.com/2011/11/blog-post_2085.html Apparently おそろか is a common misspelling/mispronunciation of 疎か, which is supposed to be read おろか or おろそか. Kinda like how 雰囲気 is supposed to be ふんいき but everyone says ふいんき. --K}

Rikka: You're right about that. Since my dream is to become a doctor, I don't have time to be hooked on other stuff.

Mana: Rikka...

Rikka: That's what I thought at least.
But it's so much fun I don't want to quit!
However, I've already decided to quit.

Mana + Alice + Makoto: Huh?

Rikka: My promise to Mama is the most important thing to me.
A week from now, there's and event where you can have a match with the Queen.
I want to test my skills against here, and then I'm done!

Makoto: What do you mean by "Queen"?

Rikka: She's the strongest Karuta player in all of Japan.

Makoto: The Princess loves Karuta, and would play it often.
We might get a lead from that.

Alice: Even the Trump Kingom has a taste for Karuta it seems.

Mana: Okay, a week from now, you said?

Rikka: Hmm?

Mana: We'll do what we can until then to help you with both Karuta and your studies.

Rikka: Girls...

Sebastian: The keys to Competitive Karuta are memorization, skill, and stamina.
I have prepared an accelerated 1-week training schedule.
The rules of a match are simple.
You each have 25 cards in front of you. The first one to reduce that number to 0 wins.
You will now have 15 minutes to memorize the layout of the cards.

Mana: Only 15 minutes?

Rikka: I've got it.

Mana: Already?!

Sebastian: "_Mu_rasame no..."{Just doing romaji here, and skipping the TL's... there's just too much of it to not be a typesetting nightmare. We can note on the blog that they can look up TLs for free on Wikisource: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Ogura_Hyakunin_Isshu --K}{Also, please when you typeset this, please emphasize the "Mu" as the key syllable (it's marked with underscores, as will further ones). --K}

Mana: Whoa! That was fast!

Rikka: That poem was what's known as a "one syllable key" poem.{Yes she says one character here, but it's two in Romaji. --K}
There's only one poem that matches that beginning syllable.
Okay, let's continue!

{And cue the training montage!}

Ryouko: Yes, this is Hishikawa. What?

Regina: Rub my shoulders.

Bel: Of course.{I find it amusing that Bel is the one who sucks up to her the most, the other two complain *alot*, w. --K}

Regina: Where's my melon juice?

Mammo: Get it yourself!

Bel: Here you go, Regina-sama.

Mammo: Stop sucking up to her!
Seriously, no one said anything about King Selfish's daughter coming here.

Regina: Hey, go get me a cream puff.

Mammo: Huh?

Regina: Or I'll tell papa on you!
Ira! Time to run an errand!
Where'd he run off to?!

Rikka: Thank you! Because of your help, I feel like I've advanced quite a bit.

Ai-chan: Kewpie!

Mana: She said, "Good luck!"

Little boy: It's the Queen!

Queen: Hello everyone.

Makoto: That woman...{Sounds more natural than "That person..." --K}

Rikka: is the queen...

{Eyecatch}

Part 2

Reciter: Let's get this "Have a match with the Queen" event started.
This is a rare opportunity to pit yourselves against a female expert, so please make sure you take full advantage of it.

All: Yes, sir.

Mana: {\i1}I'm{\i0} nervous just watching...

Reciter: "_Su_mi no e no..."

Mana: Huh? The Queen got it?

Rikka: She's fast...

Reciter: "_Fu_ku kara ni..."
"_Uka_ri keru..."
"_Konu_ hito wo..."

Queen + Boy: Thank you very much.

Rikka: So this is the Queen's Karuta...

Mana: That was intense!

Alice: I can certainly see why they call it a sport.

Rikka: She's not just fast, she sets the pace of the match by how she lays out her cards.
The difference in our skill levels is too great.
I'm no match for her.

Mana: Rikka...

Makoto: That woman...{Again, sounds more natural in English than "That person..." --K}
I really do feel something from her.

Guy in a vest: Can I have your autograph?

Queen: Sorry, but I have to refuse.

Guy in a vest: I see...

Queen: "Just because I was told 'I will come in a moment', I've waited until the coming of the mid-September moon." {She's quoting Poem #21 here, but I wasn't happy with the Wikisource TL, so I re-did it. 長月 is an old term for the 9th lunar month, hence September. 有明 means dawn, but also sometimes specifically refers to 16th onward in a lunar month. Hence "The coming of the mid-September moon" was how I translated it. I also intentionally left pronouns out to avoid the issue that the poet was male, but the speaker is female and she's applying it to her own (lack of a) love life. --K}
